Infrared refers to a section of the electromagnetic spectrum, which includes radio waves, x-rays and visible light. By using IR emitters (usually IR LEDs), the camera can send out infrared light to illuminate its target area. The more emitters a camera has, the more effective is it at illuminating a target. Certain emitters are more powerful and work best for longer distances. They achieve infrared illumination using a technology called photocell activation. Photocell activation recognizes changes in lighting conditions, so that once the infrared is no longer needed it switches to non-IR modes.

Infrared cameras can be fairly expensive when compared to standard cameras. Most likely using an alternative solution will be more cost effective. So, whenever possible install lighting and use a standard security camera. Lighting helps deter unwanted activity and allows for more flexibility with your security camera choices. If your space has no light and adding light is, for whatever reason, just not an option then our advice is to consider using IR cameras to watch your space from the closest distance possible. That is to say, IR cameras are best used in small or even confined spaces. JVC's New TK-T2101RU Mini Dome Camera

JVC Professional Products Company has officially expanded its LoLux line of video security cameras with the addition of the new TK-T2101RU. JVC Unveils New TK-T8101WPRU Bullet Camera

JVC Professional Products Company, which is a division of JVC Americas Corporation, has just announced its all new TK-T8101WPRU, a new outdoor analog bullet camera complete with 10-bit digital signal processing and integrated IR LED technology. This new camera will be a part of the company's innovative LoLux line of cameras as it provides true day/night performance in challenging lighting situations, including total darkness.

The TK-T8101WPRU comes equipped with a 1/3-inch high resolution IT CCD along with a 3.3-12mm varifocal lens for 600 TV lines of resolution with a 52 dB signal-to-noise ratio. Sensitivity in low light situations is 0.05 lux for color, 0.015 lux for black and white and 0 lux with active IR LED. In addition to that, the TK-T8101WPRU features automatic high light compensation for extreme white light and Easy Wide-D for backlight compensation.

The camera itself is housed in a die-cast aluminum case with tempered glass and a sun shield and is also dustproof and waterproof with an IP66 rated housing. The camera is also capable of operating in extreme temperatures as low as 14 degrees Fahrenheit and as high as 133 degrees. Other features include motion detection, privacy masking, digital noise reduction and on-screen menus for easy installation and setup.

Security Camera Flaw Patched for TRENDnet Security Cameras

California-based residential security camera manufacturer TRENDnet announced last week that it just released a new IP camera firmware upgrade designed to neutralize a security flaw that was recently discovered. The flaw allows internet users to gain access to live footage from a user's security camera relatively easily without knowing the password. TRENDnet issued a statement about the flaw stating that the bug only affects camera models sold by TRENDnet since April 2010. Overall, TRENDnet has announced that they have identified 18 cameras that may require the update.

According to the company in a statement, "A recent product hack revealed a vulnerability present in several TRENDnet SecurView IP cameras. TRENDnet's security team understands that video from some TRENDnet IP SecureView cameras may be accessed online in real time. Upon awareness of the issue, TRENDnet initiated immediate actions to quantify the scope of the issue, initiate corrective actions, and publish updated firmware which resolves the issue."

The BBC published a story in which Zak Wood, the Director of Global Marketing for TRENDnet, blamed the flaw on a "coding oversight". The vulnerability, according to the BBC report, was first discovered by The Verge, a technology news website. The Verge revealed details about the flaw on a blog back in the beginning of January and alerted TRENDnet about the issue.

If you bought a TRENDnet security camera on or after April 2010, I highly recommend you get TRENDnet's upgrade, unless you like unauthorized people having access to your live security camera feed, potentially being harmful to your business, home or family. It's completely up to you.

Basler Debuts New Indoor and Outdoor HD IP Dome Cameras

Basler, a specialist company in digital camera technology, has just debuted two new IP dome camera models. Samsung Unveils Three New Wireless Security Cameras at CES 2012

Samsung Techwin America has just debuted three new security camera solutions at CES 2012, all of which are aimed at home consumers. One of the devices debuted at the show was the WiFi Video Baby Monitor and its WiFi Surveillance Camera. This combo is perfect for keeping an eye on your home and personal property. In addition to the WiFi Video Baby Monitor, Samsung also debuted its WiFi inTouch camera, which offers Skype integration for video calls directly onto your HDTV.

All of these devices also feature WiFi connectivity and are designed to make wireless video security and conference calling more easily available and accessible to a bigger audience.

The WiFi Video Baby Monitor and the WiFi Surveillance Camera both have the same features with slightly different designs. Both devices are IP-based cameras with a one-touch WPS button that allows for easy wireless pairing with your home network. In addition to that, you can also register your camera with SamsungSmartCam.com, which allows you to view your live feed via a computer, smartphone or tablet whenever and wherever you want.

At launch there will be a total of five apps available and Samsung is promising more in the future. The WiFi inTouch camera will be available to the public in March for a retail price of $199.

Samsung is hoping that this new line of wireless security cameras will make home security a lot more simple and affordable for your average user since none of the cameras require a centralized server or any additional equipment. The inTouch camera should help bring a lot of internet-enabled features to older HDTVs without the need for an upgrade, and users will also be able to use their existing Skype accounts on the inTouch, allowing communication with any user on any Skype-enabled device anywhere in the world.

The first is the Axis P33 Series and the second is the Axis P3301/P3304/-V Network Camera Series. Each series offers different features that are perfectly suited for different situations and needs and each has something to offer, no matter what your security camera situation is.

The Axis P33 Series is a full-featured indoor and outdoor fixed dome camera series that is specifically designed for efficient installation. D-Link Releases Mobile Security Camera Feed App

It appears as if D-Link is taking a cue from the iViglio Smartcam Pro application, which allows you to use your iPhone or iPad camera signal as a security system, as the company is about to release a similar security camera app specifically for tablets. The main difference here, though, is that this app uses D-Link cameras that are connected to your network.

D-Link's new app, known as mydlink+, will be operational on both Apple's iOS devices and Android OS devices and will allow D-Link's customers to remotely monitor their camera feeds from anywhere in the world via an internet connection. The app will also allow you to use your tablet to monitor as many as four mydlink network cameras simultaneously. Some of the supported cameras from D-Link that work with the app include the Day/Night Network Camera with mydlink (DCS-932L) and the Wireless N Network camera.

American Dynamics Unveils Illustra 600 Series

American Dynamics has just unveiled its newest product, the Illustra 600 Series. This camera series is a good choice for security directors who need high HD video quality in all types of lighting conditions. Point Grey Adds to Flea3 USB 3.0 Camera Series

Point Grey has just announced the launch of its latest Flea3 USB 3.0 camera models. This announcement comes a mere weeks after the very successful launch of the company's first USB 3.0 cameras back in the earlier part of October. The new FL3-U3-13S2 models are based on monochrome and color versions of the Sony IMX035. The IMX035 is a high-quality CMOS sensor that is capable of generating 1.3 megapixel images at 120 FPS. In addition to that, the IMX035 uses Sony's Exmor technology, which combines the speed of CMOS with advanced-quality image sensor technologies accumulated via the development of CCDs.

The ultra-compact Flea3 only measures 29 x 29 x 30mm and provides a unique set of features that are specifically dedicated to maximizing the reliability of USB 3.0, including a 32 MByte frame buffer for image re-transmission. In addition to that, you get on-camera power, temperature, status monitoring and in-field updatable firmware. Unlike other manufacturers, Point Grey has developed its very own USB 3.0 link layer IP, which has been implemented in an FPGA.

Every CTA Rail Station Outfitted with Surveillance Cameras

If you have some underlying fear about "Big Brother" always watching you, you may want to reconsider ever going into any one of the hundreds of rail stations in Chicago. That is because Chicago leaders recently sent word to both CTA riders and criminals that each and every one of the 143 rail stations in the city are now equipped with multiple security cameras.

The cameras can't and won't stop criminals in the act, unfortunately, due to the fact that they do not provide live feeds to the Chicago Police Department or the CTA control center. It is hoped that these cameras will serve as a deterrent to criminals and also help police catch criminals brave enough to strike under the watchful eyes of the camera after they have committed the crime.

These new cameras, along with increased police patrols of the transit system, will also give transit riders an added sense of security, according to Mayor Rahm Emanuael, CTA President Forrest Claypool and Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy at the CTA Clinton station serving the Green and Pink Lines.

Footage from some of the newly deployed cameras on the platform station at Clinton and Lake Streets was recently used to arrest a suspect who attacked a woman and stole her purse in an elevator a block away from the station. The same criminal was also previously caught on surveillance using a stolen credit card. The camera evidence also connected him to a car burglary two weeks earlier near CTA headquarters.

A total of 1,735 cameras were recently installed at 78 stations that previously had no cameras whatsoever. The work, which began in June and was scheduled for completion by year's end, wrapped up six weeks ahead of schedule according to officials. A total of 65 stations already had cameras.

The project, which was federally funded, brings the grand total number of cameras to nearly 3,000, all of which are high-resolution security cameras. The number of cameras at each location varies depending on station layout and other factors according to officials. "We feel like this is about as close a saturation as you can get," Claypool stated.

The new cameras have already contributed to nearly 47 arrests of suspects who robbed or attacked passengers on the CTA system, as well as other crimes against people near CTA property in the last five months. The string of crimes includes three slayings near CTA property as well. Over 700 of the new 5000 Series rail cars that the CTA is putting into service are also outfitted with cameras. Those on-board cameras will eventually provide real-time video to police and the CTA according to officials.
