D-Link Releases Mobile Security Camera Feed App

mydlink+ camera feedIt appears as if D-Link is taking a cue from the iViglio Smartcam Pro application, which allows you to use your iPhone or iPad camera signal as a security system, as the company is about to release a similar security camera app specifically for tablets. The main difference here, though, is that this app uses D-Link cameras that are connected to your network.

D-Link's new app, known as mydlink+, will be operational on both Apple's iOS devices and Android OS devices and will allow D-Link's customers to remotely monitor their camera feeds from anywhere in the world via an internet connection. The app will also allow you to use your tablet to monitor as many as four mydlink network cameras simultaneously. Some of the supported cameras from D-Link that work with the app include the Day/Night Network Camera with mydlink (DCS-932L) and the Wireless N Network camera.

If you are constantly on the go and you want a convenient way to monitor all of your camera feeds, this app could be just what you are looking for, provided you use D-Link cameras, that is. If you do have D-Link cameras and security is a high priority, you shouldn't even be considering not getting this app. The app itself will be available for $0.99 until January 1, at which point the price will increase to $4.99, so get it quickly!

American Dynamics Unveils Illustra 600 Series

American Dynamics has just unveiled its newest product, the Illustra 600 Series. This camera series is a good choice for security directors who need high HD video quality in all types of lighting conditions. These mini dome cameras are also the choice of security integrators thanks to the free auto-configuration software and the hands-free remote auto-focus and zoom capabilities.

Other places these cameras are being integrated include banking and retail with security professionals in these fields interested in the Illustra 600 IP cameras for their unique facial detection capabilities. In places like banks and retail, where theft is one of the main hazards, facial recognition is key to discovering who robbed you and how to find them.

According to Senior Product Manager for IP Cameras at American Dynamics Steve Carney, "Capturing quality facial images is important, particularly in businesses that are monitoring places like cash registers, entrances and teller lines. Unlike other cameras on the market, the Illustra 600 has the ability to detect a face and increase the bit rate around it, without cropping out important background images. This unique handling of 'regions of interest' allows the camera to save on bandwidth and storage costs."

In addition to that, the auto-focus feature allows you to control the image and automatically focus on the area required without ever having to go to the physical camera to do so. This saves you a lot of time and money on every installation and can be easily completed with a simple mouse click. Also, the outdoor cameras in the series have a Theia wide angle lens option that provides ultra-clear views and avoids "barrel-distortion", especially at long ranges.

The Illustra 600 Series cameras are compatible with American Dynamics' VideoEdge NVR v4.01, HDVR and are also compliant with ONVIF standards, providing you with a greater flexibility in your choice of recording platforms. These cameras are available now in black and white, indoor mini-dome and IP 67 rated outdoor vandal resistant mini-dome form factors and are all available via American Dynamics' worldwide distribution channels.

Point Grey Adds to Flea3 USB 3.0 Camera Series

Point Grey FL3-U3-13S2Point Grey has just announced the launch of its latest Flea3 USB 3.0 camera models. This announcement comes a mere weeks after the very successful launch of the company's first USB 3.0 cameras back in the earlier part of October. The new FL3-U3-13S2 models are based on monochrome and color versions of the Sony IMX035. The IMX035 is a high-quality CMOS sensor that is capable of generating 1.3 megapixel images at 120 FPS. In addition to that, the IMX035 uses Sony's Exmor technology, which combines the speed of CMOS with advanced-quality image sensor technologies accumulated via the development of CCDs.

The ultra-compact Flea3 only measures 29 x 29 x 30mm and provides a unique set of features that are specifically dedicated to maximizing the reliability of USB 3.0, including a 32 MByte frame buffer for image re-transmission. In addition to that, you get on-camera power, temperature, status monitoring and in-field updatable firmware. Unlike other manufacturers, Point Grey has developed its very own USB 3.0 link layer IP, which has been implemented in an FPGA.

The new Flea3 USB 3.0 camera models are also ideal for applications in machine vision and factory automation. Scientific applications like astronomy, microscopy and biophotonics, as well as prosumer applications like video conferencing and kiosk imaging, are also available with these cameras.

According to Product Marketing Manager for Point Grey Michael Gibbons, "Point Grey is delivering on its promise to develop a full line of USB 3.0 products designed to address the demands of our customers for speed, reliability and ease-of-use. With complete control over the camera's core technology, we have the flexibility to choose what features we develop and the timing of our releases without relying on third-party chip vendors. We are also manufacturing our own USB 3.0 PCI Express interface cards and providing our own low-level xHCI driver, providing users with a reliable end-to-end imaging pipeline."

The FL3-U3-13S2 is priced at $695 and is available now from Point Grey, its network of distributors or at www.ptgreystore.com for anybody looking to purchase one here in the states. Additional Flea3 USB 3.0 models are planned to be released throughout 2012.

Every CTA Rail Station Outfitted with Surveillance Cameras

CTA Rail Station Security CamerasIf you have some underlying fear about "Big Brother" always watching you, you may want to reconsider ever going into any one of the hundreds of rail stations in Chicago. That is because Chicago leaders recently sent word to both CTA riders and criminals that each and every one of the 143 rail stations in the city are now equipped with multiple security cameras.

The cameras can't and won't stop criminals in the act, unfortunately, due to the fact that they do not provide live feeds to the Chicago Police Department or the CTA control center. It is hoped that these cameras will serve as a deterrent to criminals and also help police catch criminals brave enough to strike under the watchful eyes of the camera after they have committed the crime.

These new cameras, along with increased police patrols of the transit system, will also give transit riders an added sense of security, according to Mayor Rahm Emanuael, CTA President Forrest Claypool and Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy at the CTA Clinton station serving the Green and Pink Lines.

Footage from some of the newly deployed cameras on the platform station at Clinton and Lake Streets was recently used to arrest a suspect who attacked a woman and stole her purse in an elevator a block away from the station. The same criminal was also previously caught on surveillance using a stolen credit card. The camera evidence also connected him to a car burglary two weeks earlier near CTA headquarters.

A total of 1,735 cameras were recently installed at 78 stations that previously had no cameras whatsoever. The work, which began in June and was scheduled for completion by year's end, wrapped up six weeks ahead of schedule according to officials. A total of 65 stations already had cameras.

The project, which was federally funded, brings the grand total number of cameras to nearly 3,000, all of which are high-resolution security cameras. The number of cameras at each location varies depending on station layout and other factors according to officials. "We feel like this is about as close a saturation as you can get," Claypool stated.

The new cameras have already contributed to nearly 47 arrests of suspects who robbed or attacked passengers on the CTA system, as well as other crimes against people near CTA property in the last five months. The string of crimes includes three slayings near CTA property as well. Over 700 of the new 5000 Series rail cars that the CTA is putting into service are also outfitted with cameras. Those on-board cameras will eventually provide real-time video to police and the CTA according to officials.

Two New HD Security Cameras from Bosch

Bosch Dinion HD and FlexiDome HD camerasBosch, maker of some of the most popular security cameras, has just introduced two new IP cameras in the new Dinion HD and FlxiDome HD 720p Day/Night IP cameras. Both of these cameras are top of the line and available now. In addition to that, both of these cameras come with Bosch's Intelligent Video Analysis (IVA) pre-installed. The new models also give you the choice between a fixed-body or dome camera style with high definition IVA ready to go in a complete, plug-and-play system.

One benefit to these cameras having Bosch's IVA already pre-installed is that it is no longer necessary to buy separate licenses and go online to register and activate each individual IVA-equipped camera. This reduces the installation effort for you and makes the process go a lot faster and smoother as well. Intelligence embedded in the cameras also eliminates the need for an external server to run analytics software, which makes Bosch's cameras even more cost-effective and easier to manage for you.

Bosch further eases installation through something called an installation phase, as the software provides simple setup of detection criteria with a wizard-based graphical interface. Bosch IVA, working independently on each camera, offers a plethora of advanced detection functions including idle or removed objects, trajectory tracking and flow, line crossing, loitering, crowds and more.

As an operator, cameras pre-installed with Bosch IVA present a major asset to overall surveillance, supporting security personnel with a powerful and efficient event detection and alarm system. Events are flagged on-screen in real-time, enabling operators to never miss a thing. In addition to that, the images and video captured by these cameras can be stored together, giving operators the power to find any event, even ones that were not originally set up as alerts.

PureTech Implements PTZ Auto Follow Capability in FLIR Thermal Cameras

FLIR logo
PureTech Systems Incorporated, one of the leading manufacturers of video analytic software, just announced that it has officially teamed up with FLIR to enable PTZ Auto Follow capability on FLIR's range of high-performance thermal cameras. When joined with FLIR's PTZ camera series, PureTech's PTZ Auto Follow capability will provide a powerful addition to a facility's perimeter thermal security.

PureTech's PTZ Auto Follow capability currently allows a CCTV camera to independently follow a desired target, while the software continuously identifies the target and adjusts the pan, tilt and zoom of the camera accordingly in order to keep the target centered in the camera's field of view.

PureTech now takes this feature to a whole new level by capitalizing on the advantages provided by the FLIR thermal camera line to auto follow in conditions of low light, no light, haze, smog, sunrise/sunset, low contrast scenes or precipitation. In addition to that, the feature is also designed to follow many target types, including cars, people, trucks and boats and can also be initiated in a plethora ways including a cue from a video management system, a video analytics device, an intelligent fence, access control system, GPS or radar.

The PTZ Auto Follow capability, which has been optimized for FLIR's thermal sensor and pan-tilt mechanism, also has the added flexibility to be deployed as a server-based installation or an edge device using PureTech's Scene Analyzer. In addition the PTZ Auto Follow capability can be supported via PSIM and VMS systems including PureTech's PureActive.

In a statement from Vice President of Security and Surveillance at FLIR Systems Bill Klink, "In cooperation with PureTech Systems, we've created a force multiplier for our customers, allowing hands-free control of our cameras during an intrusion event." Larry Young, Vice President of Business Development at PureTech added, "Our role in the security market is to not only enable cameras to detect intrusions with high accuracy and low false alarm rates, but also to help make the life of the security personnel a little easier. Allowing the camera to automatically follow a target without operator interaction allows first responders to react in a more efficient and timely manner."

New PTZ Dome Camera Line from Siqura

Siqura PTZ Dome CameraSiqura B.V. just recently announced the release of an advanced PTZ dome camera line that is capable of withstanding some of the harshest environments.

Thanks to pressurized dome housings, the new camera line ensures airtight protection against excessive moisture, dirt and even pollution. This type of protection makes this camera line perfect for situations like seaports and highway tunnels, areas where corrosive elements in the atmosphere can greatly affect the performance of a surveillance system and cause unnecessary risks to both safety and security.

These cameras have an IP67 Ingress Protection rating and the housing is constructed of materials designed to withstand intense levels of solar heat. In addition to that, pressurizing the house also prevents moisture, pollution and dust from damaging the camera and its internal components.

The Siqura pressurized PTZ dome camera series includes analog and IP options as well. These cameras make precision and expediency a priority thanks to their 400 degree per second preset positioning capabilities, 26x or 35x autofocus zoom lens and 12x digital zoom. Surveillance conditions can vary widely, even for just one camera. That is why these cameras also include day/night (IR-cut) filter and backlight compensations standard, both of which can be applied manually or automatically when lighting conditions call for it. The wide dynamic functionality also ensures excellent video quality, even in the most difficult situations.

In addition to that, each of these cameras is capable of quad-streaming and supporting dual H.264 streams as well as two highly configurable MPEG-2, MPEG-4 or MJPEG encoders. This makes it easy for these cameras to offer the best quality video while simultaneously streaming network performance. In addition to that, it facilitates a wide range of migration paths within IP networks.

Every Siqura IP camera is designed to comply with worldwide adopted standards and is tested with leading VMS vendors. This makes it possible to easily integrate these cameras with a plethora of third-party systems. These cameras also come with an easy-to-use, access-controlled, Web-based user interface that allows users to configure or view video streams from a computer or mobile device.

Cisco Unveils New Security Camera Network Technology

CiscoCisco Systems Incorporated recently debuted some new technology for use in conjunction with security cameras and video footage at a recent trade show in Florida. Cisco, based in San Jose, California, is aiming its new software toward banks and other businesses that may need to build network-based security systems.

Cisco has increased its video surveillance manager products in order for the company to be able to handle as many as 120 terabytes of storage. In addition to that, the company has also brought out products that are designed to improve communication between employees and emergency personnel who may be using different types of radios or cameras.

Internet protocol cameras on a security network can be remotely configured as soon as they are linked to a network. In addition to that, they can also be remotely tested in case there is ever a problem that arises with them. These features, as well as many others, make it much easier for a company to have security camera networks at their buildings. By being able to remotely handle many tasks, you limit the need to call customer support or have a technician come out and fix the problem for you, saving you time and money.

This is sort of a new business venture for Cisco, a company that usually focuses more on hardware than network technology services. However, Cisco does have a good track record of making products that work and security camera network technology is certainly a rapidly growing industry. I'm sure whatever Cisco throws into the mix will do just fine amongst the competition.

New Thermal Analytics Processor from VideoIQ and FLIR

VideoIQVideoIQ has just recently partnered with FLIR to create a premium solution in order to provide analytics, edge NVR storage and IP video encoding that is optimized for FLIR's high-performance thermal camera range. The Thermal Analytics Processor, when combined with FLIR's SR Series or F Series of cameras, will create an effective and affordable solution for perimeter thermal security.

The Thermal Analytics Processor uses VideoIQ's new proprietary FLIR Mode analytics which is specifically tuned to get the most out of FLIR's high-resolution thermal imaging cameras. The Analytics Processor, when paired with FLIR's thermal cameras, allows you to automatically classify detected objects as either people, vehicles or boats with absolutely no calibration.

The Thermal Analytics Processor provides 160GB of on-board NVR storage which eliminates the need to stream images to a central NVR and also reduces network traffic and bandwidth by as much as 90%. This processor makes FLIR's cameras plug-and-play compatible with existing IP networks too by automatically encoding analog video from a FLIR camera into an IP video signal. In addition to that, the processor also supports integration with multiple VMS systems including Genetec, Milestone, ONSSI, Lenel and VideoIQ View.

According to a statement from Vice President of Security and Surveillance at FLIR Systems Bill Klink, "In partnership with VideoIQ, we've created the most effective and affordable off-the-shelf solution for security detection, analysis, alarming, recording and notification."

Ed Bednarcik, President and CEO of VideoIQ added, "By working with FLIR, we've developed the most scalable and accurate zero light surveillance solution available on the market for critical infrastructure, government and transportation customers, whether they're deploying a single camera in a remote location or hundreds of cameras to protect a large facility."

Samsung SCV-2081 Dome CameraTwo low-cost additions to Samsung's compact vandal-resistant dome CCTV camera line were released recently, the SCV-2081 and SCV-3081, both of which are compact surface-mounted dome cameras that have both indoor and outdoor functionality.

Both of these new models are housed in a highly durable die-cast aluminum chassis and both are also IP66 rated and capable of surviving sustained punishment. They also have a plethora of uses including uses at offices, retailers, parking lots, schools, hospitals or even homes.

According to Senior European Product Manager for Samsung Techwin Europe Peter Ainsworth, "Although the SCV-2081 and SCV-3081 will operate effectively at temperatures as low as -10 degrees Celsius and incorporate all the key features other dome cameras in the Samsung vandal-resistant dome camera range, their price point is considerably lower than other models which are built to withstand much lower temperatures. As a result, the SCV-2081 and SCV-3081 make the perfect solution for those applications that are prone to attack or tampering, but do not suffer from extreme cold weather conditions."

As far as specs go, the SCV-2081 has a built-in 3.6x varifocal lens and also incorporates Samsung Techwin's W-V DSP chipset in order to give you higher quality color images at up to 600 TV lines color resolution. In addition to that, it also comes with Samsung Super Noise Reduction technology as well as coaxial control compatibility which allows the on-screen display menu to be accessed from the control room through a compatible DVR.

The SCV-3081, on the other hand, comes with a built-in 3.9x varifocal lens and has Samsung Techwin's SV-V chipset. This chipset shares all the advanced features of the W-V chipset with cameras with Wide Dynamic Range and Progressive Scan.

Bosch Adds Dinion IP Cameras to HD Camera Line

Bosch Security Systems has just introduced the newest additions to the Bosch HD portfolio, the Dinion HD 1080p Day/Night IP camera series. These IP cameras combine full 1080p HD images with excellent low light operation and color reproduction in order to provide you with an advanced level of detail for your surveillance applications.

The Dinion HD 1080p IP cameras deliver very clear images, even in busy, colorful locations. This is thanks, in part, to a specially selected image sensor which delivers superior detection and analysis. Images are very clear, which makes it easier to identify items, while different color tones can be distinguished, even in bad lighting.

These 2-megapixel cameras enable easy identification of things such as faces, objects and alphanumerical information over a wide area. Users will be able to zoom in on any point of a scene in order to examine specific details without sacrificing clarity of picture. These cameras also produce images with a 16:9 aspect ratio that provide increased situational awareness with a maximized field of view.

In addition to that, these cameras also have built-in Intelligent Video Analysis (IVA), which flags alarm events on screen to make sure that operators never miss a thing. The higher pixel densities also enable these cameras to optimize the performance of IVA with improved detection for things like loitering, line crossing and other potential threats.

Installation and set-up is also very simple. The cameras have a quick start-up as well as user-friendly controls for a speedy configuration. In addition to that, the motorized automatic back focus makes finding the perfect image the first time easy and also ensures accurate focus for both day and night operation.

The Dinion HD cameras also feature Power over Ethernet (PoE), so no additional power supplies are necessary, making them very energy efficient. These cameras also conform to the Open Network Video Interface Forum (ONVIF) standard, making integration with third-party security solutions easy.

University in Louisiana Increases Security Cameras

Nicholls State UniversityNicholls State University, out of Thibodaux, Louisiana, is adding hundreds of security cameras to its campus in order to increase security. However, while some students are pleased and welcome the added surveillance, others are becoming increasingly puzzled about the move.

According to Executive Vice President Larry Howell, "This is just another piece of the continued improvements on campus. Nicholls has always been a safe campus for our students, faculty and staff, and we are committed to making it even safer."

As of right now, 157 cameras are already installed on the campus. The school hopes to add 193 additional cameras by the end of the year bringing the total up to 350 cameras. Cameras have been and will be installed in common areas and corridors of residence halls, cash-collection points, the gymnasium, union, cafeteria and Beauregard Hall.

Craig Jaccuzzo, head of university police at Nicholls, says that the cameras are being installed in phases as buildings are being renovated. "As we can financially support adding cameras, we are doing so," he said. Jaccuzzo estimates that the total cost for the entire system is about $400,000 with each camera casting about $980.

Jaccuzzo was quick to dismiss questions that the new cameras were being added in response to a specific misdeed or crime. "You see a lot of campuses doing this kind of thing whenever something bad happens," he states. "We're doing it to be proactive." Jaccuzzo also added that the cameras can be used to monitor live events and can also store up to two weeks of footage.

As far as students' feelings on the new cameras go, many are positive. Most of the students interviewed about the cameras stated that the new system makes them feel safer. However, one complaint about the cameras was that the number of cameras seems excessive.

"A couple hundred seems over the top for me," said communications sophomore Chelsea Bray. "If it were a few dozen, it would be alright. Is there really that much happening here?"

Other students are worried about the cameras infringing upon their privacy. Jaccuzzo responded to the privacy concerns saying, "We're only placing the cameras where there are no expectations of privacy." Jaccuzzo stated that he usually tells the students who complain about privacy to focus on the security these cameras provide. "I ask them if they are willing to give up inches of that type of freedom so they can sleep at night. All of them are pretty much in line when they understand that."

Wireless Alarm Monitoring Systems

alarm monitoring systemsIt seems that more and more people every day are beginning to install home alarm monitoring systems at their residences. What was once considered a niche market, only accessible by the rich, has grown into a more common place situation. People all over the country are using a variety of services and systems to monitor their homes and businesses.

Since the market is becoming more accessible, it is only reasonable to believe that the monitoring systems have been drastically modified in order to fit the needs of different individuals. Different people have different needs and alarm monitoring manufacturers need to keep these differences in mind in order for their products to have a larger audience.

Over the last couple of years, the alarm monitoring market has had incredible amounts of additions with a lot of innovations and developments that have completely transformed the market. You can get systems that incorporate almost unnoticeable security cameras and even motion detecting sensors. However, this usually comes at a high cost which most average home owners can't afford.

That is why it is smart to go with a manually assembled wireless alarm monitoring system, especially if you are operating within a tight budget. Wired alarm systems may be more reliable as you do not have to deal with a potential loss of signal but that reliability will cost you a little extra cash. Benefits to installing a wireless alarm monitoring system, aside from the ones in your wallet, include:

  • Easier to install and maintain

  • Greater area of coverage

  • Difficult to disable due to lack of wiring that can be easily cut or disconnected

These are just a few benefits of having a wireless alarm monitoring system installed at your home or business. So the next time you are thinking about installing some type of security system at your house but are short on money, try starting off with something simple, like a wireless alarm monitoring system.

What to Expect from the Future of Security Cameras

digital security cameraAccording to the President and CEO of Axis Communications Ray Mauritsson, "The next few years will see a continuing switch from analog to digital surveillance cameras, and to the increased use of processing power built into individual cameras."

Mauritsson, speaking at the official opening of Axis' Melbourne office, stated that Axis would continue to take advantage of the processing power of its custom-designed ASICs in order to deliver features as opposed to just image resolution. One example that Mauritsson brought up was that parts of new algorithms for video analytics will be put into security cameras in order to improve scalability, with other parts remaining centralized.

Axis' recently released Q1602 features the company's Lightfinder technology, which allows algorithms built into the ASIC to compensate for the characteristics of the camera's lens and image sensor. This allows you to receive improved image quality, even in low light situations, and performs better than the human eye in near darkness.

Approximately 2/3 of the of the surveillance camera market is still analog according to Mauritsson. However, the shift to digital/IP cameras is moving along quickly. Year-over-year growth is roughly 10% overall though it is around 30% for digital cameras. Mauritsson predicts that the market penetration of IP cameras will be around 90% to 95% by the year 2020.

In addition to that, Mauritsson also believes that the deployment of the NBN will probably see the emergence of video surveillance as a service as well as the outsourcing of video monitoring and storage to cloud providers. This, according to Mauritsson, will be especially useful to small sites with only 5 to 10 cameras.

Image quality is one of the main factors that is helping drive the transition to digital security cameras. Analog cameras are limited to PAL/NTSC standards but digital cameras are capable of displaying images in full 1080p HD. In addition to that, another factor is the seemingly low cost of installation.

Power over Ethernet (PoE) allows you to use a single cable to connect an IP camera. An analog camera needs at least one cable to power it and another cable to run the video signal. Other things, like PTZ functionality, audio and control functions add to the cabling as well as the complexity of the installation.

However, Mauritsson believes that the transition to digital cameras is being delayed by systems integrators that prefer to stay in their old analog ways due to comfort and familiarity. Mauritsson expects big things from the future of security cameras, even though the process of getting there is slow going.
